Quick Facts about SR-22

Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate, otherwise known as SR-22 insurance, is a type of motor vehicle liability insurance. A-MAX Auto Insurance can provide you with an affordable SR-22 insurance document that will certify that an individual has the minimum liability insurance as required by law. We also automatically notify the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) when an SR-22 is cancelled, terminated, or lapses.

If you have lost driving privileges or your license has been suspended or revoked as the result of a car crash, conviction or judgment, you are required to file an SR-22 with the DMV and maintain coverage for two years starting from the date of the conviction. An insurance card or policy will not be accepted in place of an SR-22.

What Are The Most Common Reasons Drivers Get An SR-22?

Drivers request an SR-22 certificate for numerous reasons; however, most often it's to help ensure the Department of Motor Vehicles that you have the basic insurance coverage as required by law. Some of the most common reasons this is requested of drivers by the state are:

➤    Failure to show proof of auto insurance

➤    A DUI or DWI or any serious moving violation

➤    An at-fault accident while driving without insurance

➤    Repeat traffic offenses or too many tickets in a short time period

➤    A revoked or suspended license

How Much Does an SR-22 Insurance Certificate Cost?

Car insurance companies often charge a small amount as a one-time fee for an SR-22 insurance filing. If you've been requested to file an SR-22 because you didn't have insurance at the time you'll first have to get state minimum coverage as well which will be charged separately from the SR-22 filing. If you already have auto insurance and the state has requested an SR-22 filing then you should call them for a price quote first. If you are not currently covered, get a quote from your A-MAX agent for a new auto insurance policy and make sure to tell them you also need an SR-22 Certificate filed with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Will an SR-22 Insurance Certificate Raise My Auto Insurance Rates?

It is unlikely that having an SR-22 certificate filed with the state would increase your insurance rates. Depending on the reason you're filing an SR-22, however, your insurance company could raise your rates based on those reasons. Your current insurance company may raise your rates more than others would. If your rates increased because of any reason, call an A-MAX agent at 800-921-AMAX and see if we can help you find the same quality insurance at a lower rate.
