What to Know about Indiana's Car Insurance Laws

Similar to most states, Indiana drivers must hold a minimum of liability auto insurance to be considered legal. Liability car insurance ensures that the driver at fault can cover the costs of damage to the other vehicle. Liability will not cover any damage to your own vehicle, however, so full coverage is often recommended.

Minimum coverage must include the following:

⬤   Bodily injury coverage of at least $25,000 per person

⬤   Bodily injury coverage of at least $50,000 per accident

⬤   Property damage coverage of at least $25,000 per accident

Additional options could include coverage for other incidents:

⬤   Full coverage will cover the cost of damage to your vehicle, as well as the other vehicle if the accident is your fault.

⬤   Gap coverage can help pay off an auto loan if your car is stolen or totaled.

⬤   Comprehensive coverage will help to cover costs of damage not sustained during a collision, such as door dings and windshield replacement.

⬤   Roadside assistance for unexpected mechanical issues or towing costs.

⬤   Uninsured motorist coverage can protect you if you’re on the receiving end of a collision where the other driver does not have coverage. 15.8% of drivers in Indiana are uninsured.

⬤   Rental car reimbursement could save you some money if you need to rent a car while yours is being repaired.

Driving without car insurance in Indiana is illegal and can result in license suspension. Additionally, you may be required to get an SR-22 certificate after one or more offenses. Multiple offenses could eventually result in large fines and longer suspension periods.
