Winter Wonderland?

By Ben Ajayi

For some, this is the best time of year. Cozy socks, fireplaces, warm clothing, and a great excuse to cancel those plans you made. But for others, the winter weather could be a disaster for their vehicles and homes.

Here are some tips to keep what’s important to you safe from the winter weather.

• Allow your engine to fully warm before driving
• Make sure to have an ice scraper handy
• Check your car fluids regularly
• Frequently check your tire pressure
• Make sure your windshield wipers aren’t worn out
• Put together an emergency kit to keep in your vehicle

• Drive slower than you normally would in ideal weather conditions
• Use caution on bridges, ramps, and overpasses
• Maintain three times the normal distance between you and the nearest vehicle
• If your vehicle starts to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes. Steer into the direction of the skid until you have regained traction, then straighten out your vehicle

• Cover all outside faucets to prevent freezing
• Remove all hoses connected to outside faucets
• Leave the cabinets open under your kitchen and bathroom sinks
• Make sure you locate your water main cut-off valve
• Tightly close windows and doors to keep cold air out
• Have a steady drip from faucets
• Invest in a generator
• Put together an emergency kit
